Free Super Star Foundation Paper Piecing Pattern

If you have been wanting to try foundation paper piecing, the free Super Star pattern is a simple place to begin.

Super Star is a playful star-shaped figure dressed in a top and pants. Once the block is pieced, you can give your Super Star a little more personality by drawing on a face with a permanent fabric marker or adding a few simple embroidery stitches.

A beginner-friendly FPP block

The Super Star pattern has been designed with beginners in mind. It is an approachable introduction to foundation paper piecing and a good way to try a Thimbles and Needles pattern before choosing your next project.

The pattern is also scrap friendly. You only need small pieces for the clothing, hair and other details, making it a useful way to use some of the offcuts in your scrap collection.

Six block sizes included

The free pattern includes six finished block sizes:

  • 3 inches
  • 4 inches
  • 5 inches
  • 6 inches
  • 8 inches
  • 9 inches

The smaller sizes are suitable for little accessories and decorative details, while the larger blocks work well for cushions, bags and quilts.

Ideas for using your Super Star block

There are plenty of ways to turn the finished block into something useful:

  • Add it to the front of a book bag or library bag
  • Make a personalised mug rug
  • Turn it into a small wall hanging
  • Add it to a cushion
  • Use it as the centre of a quilt block
  • Make several characters for a children’s quilt
  • Add a name underneath for a personalised gift
  • Use different fabric combinations to create a group of individual Super Stars

You could make each figure different by changing the clothing, colours, hair and facial details. This makes the block particularly suitable for using scraps and creating a quilt with plenty of variety.

Adding the face

Complete the foundation paper piecing before adding the facial details. A permanent fabric marker is the quickest option, but test it on a scrap of fabric first to check that it does not bleed.

For an embroidered face, a few simple backstitches are all you need. Add the embroidery before turning the block into the final project, while the back of the block is still easy to reach.
