Sawtooth Star Cutting Chart - Free Download

This post outlines how I make the Sawtooth Star block including a tip when using directional fabric. In this tutorial, I’m making a 6 inch block but if you would like to make another size block, download the free Sawtooth Star Cutting Chart for block sizes 3” to 20”.

How to make Sawtooth Star Quilt Block

Cut pieces according to the cutting chart.

Measurements for the 6 inch block are:

A x 4 (2” squares) in background fabric

B x 1 (4 1/4” square) in background fabric

C x 4 (2 3/8” squares) for star points

D x 1 (3 1/2” square) for star centre

Cut B twice on the diagonal.

Cut C pieces once on the diagonal. These will be the star points.

If you are using directional fabric, like stripes, you can make the fabrics lie in the same direction by cutting 2 of the C pieces on one diagonal and the other two C pieces on the opposite diagonal.

Make the flying geese units.

To get the stripes to lie in the same direction, pair up pieces cut on opposite diagonals.

Line up the raw edges of a C and B piece, wrong sides together, along the bottom and diagonal.

Sew a scant quarter inch seam along the diagonal. ‘Scant’ means just shy a full quarter inch. When the C piece is folded over, the fold itself will take up some of the C fabric. Sewing a scant quarter inch ensures the size of the C piece is maintained.

Fold over the C piece and finger press seam towards C.

Sew the other C piece in a similar way.

Trim off the dog ears. To avoid cutting off the points of the flying geese, ensure there is a quarter inch seam allowance at the tip of your triangle.

Your unit should measure 2” x 3 1/2” including seam allowances.

Layout all the pieces of the block.

Sew into rows.

Press the seams in the top and bottom rows towards the outer edge.

Press the seams of the middle row, towards the centre.

Sew rows together.

Press seams towards the centre.

Your star should measure 6 1/2” square including seam allowances (or 6 “ finished).
