A scrap quilt that uses 2.5 inch squares

Creating scrap quilts with 2.5 inch squares is a wonderful way to use up even the smallest pieces of fabric. This method is perfect for those who love detail and enjoy the process of piecing together small elements to form a beautiful whole. There are many quilters who may already have scraps cut into 2.5 inch squares - in that case, the cutting is already half done for this quilt! A quilt made from 2.5 inch squares also means the Dominoes quilt is precut friendly so perfect for using up your leftover jelly rolls, layer cakes and charm squares.

A Scrap quilt that can be made from Stash

Every quilter has a stash of leftover fabrics from previous projects. The Dominoes quilt is an ideal way to utilise these fabrics, turning what might otherwise be waste into a stunning quilt. Sorting through your stash can be a nostalgic journey, and incorporating these fabrics into a new quilt adds a personal touch and a sense of history to your creation.

In the sample quilt, a mix of low volume fabrics was used for the background. There is no need to worry if you have enough of a single fabric to complete your quilt. The more fabrics, the better and don’t worry about mixing your whites, with your off-whites with your creams - anything goes!

At the heart of scrap quilting is the art of making do. This philosophy encourages quilters to use what they have on hand, embracing creativity and resourcefulness.

A Scrap Quilt for Beginners

It’s a great scrap quilt for beginners as it is an excellent way to practice your skills without the pressure of perfection. You can experiment with different fabrics, colours, and patterns. Plus, there's a unique charm in the randomness of a scrap quilt that makes each piece truly one-of-a-kind.

One of the greatest joys of making scrap quilts is the speed and enjoyment they bring. Dominoes comes together quickly without a strict colour scheme however like any scrap quilt, the best results come from sticking to a similar genre of fabrics. For example, combining civil war fabrics with 1930’s fabrics with batiks will “muddy” the look of the quilt. You can quickly cut your fabric scraps into uniform pieces and start sewing. The spontaneity of combining different fabrics makes the process exciting and gratifying.
