You never know when inspiration will strike. I was in a sewing slump for months. I wanted to sew but stared blankly at my stash not knowing what to do with it. Then I started playing with my scraps and stash and it evolved into the Clippings Quilt.
I find naming quilts one of the hardest parts of the process. I came across the word ‘clippings’ which refers to parts cut out of newspapers and magazines and usually collated into a scrapbook of some sort. Well I guess this quilt could be seen as that. The coloured fabrics are like ‘clippings’ from your stash paired with a light and dark neutral.
Fabric Choices
I have had many people ask me about the dark spot fabric I used. Sadly, this is long out of print. It is by an Australian fabric manufacturer called ‘A Day in the Country’. I am not sure if they distribute internationally. Anyway, years ago when I saw this particular fabric in the sale section on the Amitie Textiles website, I bought metres of it and have used it in several projects. The colour way I have is ‘Tornado Grey’. I would describe it as a dark brown grey colour.
I think alternatives such as a small check, solid or any other small geometric pattern with a solid background would work well.
For the light fabric, I just used a solid white but any other low volume would work well.
For the coloured pieces, I suggest including a mix of
- scale - small, medium and large prints
- value - light, mid and dark value prints
- types of prints - geometrics like spot/stripes/checks, florals and the occasional novelty
Having this mix will help create a ‘sparkly’ quilt!
