FPP - Frequently Asked Questions
What is foundation paper piecing (FPP)?
Foundation paper piecing (FPP) is a quilting technique where fabric is sewn directly onto a printed paper template. This allows you to achieve very precise seams and shapes that are difficult to piece with traditional methods.
What skill level do I need to make the patterns?
The patterns are designed for advanced beginners and up. If you know the basics of foundation paper piecing, you’ll find them straightforward. Each pattern avoids tricky y-seams and has simplified sections wherever possible.
Are instructions included?
General tips on foundation paper piecing and order of assembling the sections are included but the maker is assumed to know how to foundation paper piece. Fabric requirements and cutting instructions are not included.
What can I make with these blocks?
These blocks are versatile and can be used in quilts, table runners, tote bags, pouches, mug rugs, pincushions, and many other small projects. They’re a great way to add a unique touch to your sewing.
What sizes are included?
Each pattern comes with multiple block sizes, giving you flexibility depending on your project. The sizes that are included are listed just above the "Add to cart" button and the listing images.
How can I resize fpp blocks?
Read this page about how to resize foundation paper piecing templates.
Do the templates include seam allowance?
Yes, every template includes a quarter-inch seam allowance, ready for you to sew without extra adjustments.
How do I print the pattern?
You’ll receive a digital PDF file that can be printed on your home printer. Be sure to print at “100%” or “actual size” and use the one-inch test square to check for accuracy.
Why is the pattern not printing to the correct size?
All the patterns have been fully tested to print to scale. If you have printed at 100% or 'Actual Size' and the one inch test box is still not the correct size, the problem is most likely the printer driver. I have found from experience that if the printer does the not have it's own printer driver installed on the computer, it may not print to size. For example, the default Windows print driver is installed but your printer is a Brother machine. In this case, you need to install the Brother print driver. You will have to Google how to do that for your specific printer.
Can I print from my phone?
It is possible to print from a phone however there are often limitations when it comes to checking for scaling. Some phones may 'auto fit' and your pattern may not print to the correct size.
Do I get a physical pattern in the mail?
No. These are digital PDF downloads only, so you can start sewing right after purchase.
Can I sell items I make with this pattern?
Yes, you may sell handmade items created with my patterns in small quantities, but please credit the pattern design to Thimbles and Needles. The PDF files themselves may not be shared or resold.
