How to build a color palette for your quilt
Share
Coolors.co is a colour scheme generator that allows users to create and customise colour palettes for various design projects. I write about some the site’s features below - all of them available for free.
-
Generate colour palettes with the tap of the space bar. These are some that I generated.
The site provides several export options, including PNG, SVG, PDF, and SCSS. This will allow you to use them in other programs or share with other people.
2. Explore and be inspired by trending colour palettes.
3. Use the Image picker to extract colour palettes from a photo. Move the circles to different parts of the photo to create a unique colour palette or move the Picked Palettes slider for the site to generate a palette from the image.
Tap on Browse Image to select your photo. The photo can be your own, a webpage or a stock image.
4. The Gradient Palette is another fun feature. Choose your start and end colours and the number of colours.
Here is an example:
5. The Collage Maker is a great feature where you can combine a photo and a palette.
6. The Color Contrast Checker is useful for checking the readability of text printed onto a colour background.
To check the contrast ratio of two colours, just select them in your palette and click the "Check Contrast" button. Coolors.co will show you the contrast ratio and how the colours look to people with different types of colour blindness. If the contrast ratio is too low, it might be hard to read, so you might want to try adjusting your colors.
7. If you are interested in seeing how a colour blind person may view certain colours, you might like to try the colour blindness simulation.
To try the simulation, click the ‘spectacles’ icon on the menu bar. You can then pick the type of colour blindness you want to simulate. Coolors.co will show you how your colour palette looks to someone with that type of colour blindness. If your colours are hard to distinguish in the simulation, you might want to adjust them to make your palette more accessible.
Overall, Coolors.co is a great tool that quilters can use to create beautiful colour palettes for their quilting projects. Use it as a tool for experimentation to try out different colour combinations and see how they look together before committing to a particular design. It's a great way to refine your ideas.
I would love to know how you use this tool in your next quilting project!
